About this deal

Inch based identifications indicate the width in a decimal (26 × 1.75) or as a fraction (26 × 1 3⁄4), and although these size identifications can be mathematically equal, they also can refer to different size tires, which are not interchangeable. ( 28 × 1 1⁄2 is not the same size as 28 × 1.50) That’s how the diameter and circumference (circ – equals distance rolled in one turn of the wheel) are calculated in the Tyre size table. These figures are useful for setting your cycle-computer and precisely calculating gears.

Both indications are, however, very imprecise. A less wide 28 inch tire, e.g. with a tire width of 23 mm, which is usual for a road bike, has in fact only an outer diameter of something more like 26 inches. In the case of a tire width of 40 mm,Chain reaction Cycles and CRC are trading names of Wiggle Ltd (In Administration) registered in the United Kingdom at 1000 Lakeside, Suite 310, Third Floor N E Wing, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO6 3EN, The silliest answer to this question would be to say that the difference is exactly 1 inch. Another answer would be: There is no difference.

The ETRTO size specification 37-622 indicates the width of 37 mm and the tire inner diameter of 622 mm. This dimension is clear and allows for precise classification of the rim size. The inch marking (e.g. 28 x 1.40) states the approximate outer diameter (28 inches) and the tire width (1.40 inches). Another inch marking is 28 x 1 5/8 x 1 3/8 (approximate outer diameter x tire height x tire width); it is also common. Some rims are also now marked according to ISO with their bead diameter and internal section (width where the tyre fits); 622-17 for the size usually fitted to touring and hybrid bikes, for instance. But some manufacturers give the overall width instead. Subtract 6mm from overall width to estimate the rim section, or simply measure the distance between the flanges. Two tyres with the same ISO markings are completely interchangeable, even if one seems to be metric and the other is also marked in inches. For example, 650B and 26×1½ are both 38-584 and should be marked accordingly. Look for the ISO numbers and you always know exactly where you are.

On the other hand it increases the stress on the sidewall of the tyre. Mountain bike tyres are designed to take this extra stress but road tyres are not. In the past, 23mm was the typical width for most road tyres, and some tyres came in a 20mm width or narrower. Puncture Force Blunt Needle: The Blunt needle has a flat tip and won't split the casing wires. To puncture the tire, the blunt needle has to cut the casing wires.

Along the very narrow centre of the tyre is a somewhat smoother path to promote low rolling resistance, but as soon as you lean slightly left or right, you’ll be engaging fully with the tread. If the rim is not marked with its bead diameter you can read this from the tyre – it’s the one dimension they have in common. Inch dimensions are widely used in both MTB sport and English language countries. Therefore, we will continue to use these specifications for all tires. But only in decimal form, e.g. 26 x 2.25. Experience tells us that nowadays very few users are familiar with the classical fractional inch dimensions, such as 28 x 1 5/8 x 1 3/8.A few years ago 29 inch tires were introduced as a new wheel size for mountain bikes in the US. The marking was created, as the MTB tires are more voluminous and the outer diameter measures approximately 29 inches. Puncture Force Sharp Needle: Pre-2021, this score was known as 'Puncture Resistance'. On some tires with weakly bonded casing wires, the sharp needle can split the casing wires resulting in a lower score.
