Description

I will say, however, that reading Grudem here has made me commit to review my position on the topic and examine my own understanding. Prior to that, he had taught for 20 years at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, where he was chairman of the department of biblical and systematic theology.

Systematic Theology, Second Edition: An Introduction to

This series from Wayne Grudem introduces you to the doctrines of God's Word, God, humanity, Christ, the Holy Spirit, redemption, the church, and much more. But you should also resolve not to believe any individual doctrine simply because a course or textbook or teacher says that it’s true. Another thing I did not quite like was his attitude of "if __ parable means A, it cannot mean anything else. Grudem's painstaking work, an even better, more complete, updated version of this excellent theology book. There are some doctrines or definitions given where I believed that Grudem may have shot wide of the mark.

I used to tell people that Grudem's Systematic Theology was the best single volume theology available. Biblical theology also focuses on how the biblical authors and their original audience understood each doctrine. Each chapter follows the same structure: discussion of the doctrine being considered, an explanation of that doctrine's biblical support and possible objections, followed by personal application and key terms to know for personal growth. He seems to think that just because there're things happening all around us that we can't see, it means everything that happens is part of our space time continuum. The second position is mistaken and should be abandoned in favour of the idea that Christ submits to the Father in his economic role as mediator of the covenant of grace. Yet this isn't enough, as it is clear that zeitgeist of "Scientism" has an undue influence in his reading of Genesis. The most widely used resource of the last 25 years in its area, Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem has been thoroughly revised and expanded (all 57 chapters) for the first time while retaining the features that have made it the standard in its field: clear explanations, an emphasis on each doctrine's scriptural basis, and practical applications to daily life.

Grudem, with his underlying polemical focus on the insipid quarrels of a corner of evangelicalism, only raises my ire. Because he ignores church history, Scripture becomes God's one fixed action in history (Does it even replace Jesus?Every time a Christian says something about what the whole Bible says, he or she is in a sense doing “systematic theology”—according to our definition—by thinking about various topics and answering the question, “What does the whole Bible teach us today? Additional material respectfully explaining evangelical Protestant differences with Roman Catholicism (with extensive interaction with the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church), Protestant liberalism, and Mormonism. It was there when I was first exploring Christian doctrine and there when I was ready to dive deeper. In this second edition he has made further improvements by including new material and by modifying his views on a few difficult issues.
