About this deal

"Double Lives: Neo-Victorian Girlhood in the Fiction of Libba Bray and Nancy Springer". Neo-Victorian Studies. 5 (1): 38–59. Enola’s only clue is a very strange bouquet of flowers and plants at the Watson residence. Knowing that certain botanicals have hidden meanings, the youngest Holmes knows that there’s something not quite right about this arrangement. In her quest to find Dr. Watson, Enola’s sleuthing will involve uncoding a series of cryptic communiques, donning a series of disguises and travelling into the deepest, most terrifying location in all of London- the madhouse of Clooney Hatch! Mycroft seems to care a bit more about stuff than was previously thought. Oh, and he knows about flowers!

she made a much more satisfactory man than a woman, and it was narrow-minded of Pertelote to think otherwise” ….wut? This is about a woman who has literally no face left, disguising herself as a man to take revenge on Dr. Watson…. And this is what we have to say about it? Okay then. Enola shows herself to be an intelligent, rational, resourceful, and brave protagonist. Readers will look forward to hearing this heroine’s unique voice again.” — Publishers Weekly, starred review Maneron, Philippe. "Les enquêtes d'Enola Holmes - BD, informations, cotes". Bedetheque.com (in French). Dr. Watson is the main focus, and that is as it should be. (although, since he’s missing, and the book is from Enola’s perspective, we don’t really see him a lot)

Check-In

This is the moment teens Seth, Anaya, and Petra have both been anticipating and dreading ever since aliens called cryptogens began attempting to colonize the Earth: the chance to defend their planet. a b c Simmons, Tony (2019-08-13). " 'Stranger Things' star Millie Bobby Brown shooting film based on Bonifay author's novels". Panama City News Herald . Retrieved 2020-09-27. The Enola Holmes Mysteries has been classified as an example of neo-Victorian literature for young adults, in part due to the author's use of Victorian woman's clothes as a method to show female empowerment through the main character. [9] [10] According to Amy Montz, Nancy Springer rewrites the "social and personal expectations for fashion". [9] :91 For Montz, the corset is one of the main pieces of clothing for Victorian era stories, as "it is both public and private, masculine and feminine, utilitarian and ornamental, necessary and reviled." [9] :92 In the Enola Holmes series, the corset is a piece of "protection, [...] masquerade [...] and storage space," and is highlighted throughout the various books. Variety. tl;dr: The ‘Enola Holmes’ books are an engaging, entertaining and empowering take on the Holmes mythos which will be a hit with girls in their tweens.

I initially read/listened to audiobook version of the Enola Holmes mysteries when my girls were very small. Now they are much older and enjoy listening to audiobooks, I thought it would be fun if we listened to the Enola Holmes stories this summer when we drive around on errands. This title is only available as an ebook or audiobook. [7] Enola Holmes and the Elegant Escapade (2022) [ edit ]The bizarre bouquet containing hawthorn, poppies, convolvulus and asparagus greens had come from someone who was too odd to belong to any organization. Someone eccentric, petty and spiteful in quite a creative way, someone enjoying an interesting “garden” variety of gleeful madness. MacPherson, Karen (29 May 2007). "It's no mystery why these books are engrossing". Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. p.C7 . Retrieved 17 March 2016. The fact that Enola guessed the solution because asparagus sounds like a spear of gus which sounds like Augustus which is the name of a guy recently put into an asylum is kinda hilarious to me. It should be in the dislikes, but it’s just so funny and preposterous how she keeps stumbling into clues that I’m gonna put it here. Released in September 2022, Enola is once again trying to help her friend, Lady Cecily. [8] Enola Holmes and the Mark of The Mongoose (2023) [ edit ] Springer, Nancy (22 June 2015). Enola Holmes is the star of the Enola Holmes Mysteries written by Nancy Springer. Currently, there are seven books in the series. The Case of the Bizarre Bouquet is the third book and this graphic novel is a stunning visual adaptation of it. To acquire the supplies she needs for her disguise, Enola visits a shop run by a woman who calls herself Pertelote. It transpires that Pertelote is an accomplice to Watson's kidnapping, and that Pertelote's sister is behind it. Now, while it does take some clever work on Enola's part to figure that out, she would never have been in position to do so without this huge coincidence. The force behind this adaptation and of the previous two books is Serena Blasco. She’s a writer/artist from France and Blasco’s work is really amazing. She blends ink and watercolors with a vibrant palette of pastels to bring Victorian Era London to life! Plus Blasco makes the mysteries very interactive. a b c d Montz, Amy L. (2019). "Unbinding the Victorian Girl: Corsetry and Neo-Victorian Young Adult Literature". Children's Literature Association Quarterly. 44 (1): 88–101. doi: 10.1353/chq.2019.0005. Nancy Springer has passed the fifty-book milestone, having written that many novels for adults, young adults and children, in genres including mythic fantasy, contemporary fiction, magical realism, horror, and mystery -- although she did not realize she wrote mystery until she won the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America two years in succession. DARK LIE, recently released from NAL, is her first venture into mass-market psychological suspense.Determined to find the missing porter, Enola travels to the rough part of London where the boys live and starts searching Aldgate Pump area for the missing boy. When she finds the missing buttons - but not the boy - she decides that drastic action is essential if she's to save the missing boy. Oh, and Enola tells a story of a women who was put away into an insane asylum because she sat down on the ground in her dress and her husband thought it was less embarrassing than divorce. Um….. okay. This author really wants to portray these times as just a living hell, doesn’t she? Sweet god, how I love these books! Sorry. That’s not something a professional reviewer should start off by saying is it? I should probably be coy about my opinions. I should couch my language with faint praise saying sniffy little things like, “It seems that Ms. Springer has truly found an oeuvre that will suit some out there”. My review would nod its head at her other books and series and then end with constructive criticism along the lines of, “Certainly children in search of mysteries will have no problems with Ms. Springer’s popular choices.” Well, forget it. I can’t be all detached and restrained when I’m talking about Enola Holmes. The fact of the matter is that I can’t get enough of her. From the minute I read her first story The Case of the Missing Marquess, I was hooked. Now we’re on Enola’s third caper, The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets, and things are heating up. Whether you’ve been reading these books faithfully from the start, or have just dropped into this series without seeing its predecessors, this is one Enola Holmes mystery that is bound to mystify, confound, and delight. Each of the books has a central mystery at its core that Enola has to solve. Typically, these are focused on women and their problems in the era. For example — women being forced to wear corsets, thrown into arranged marriages, being robbed etc. (the rest of the review is available at my blog or any of the links below)

The relationships between Enola and her mother and Enola and her siblings are explored a little bit, but you’re left asking for more. Continuing my summer binge of Enola Holmes, next we get the third novel, The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets. Dr. Watson, who Enola views from a distance as a father figure, has gone missing. No one has any clues. Enola disguises herself and befriends Mrs. Watson, gaining entrance to the Watson residence. There she sees the titular bizarre bouquet and realizes that it’s a message sent with the language of flowers—something that of course her brothers have overlooked—and it bodes ill. Our villain is disfigured, because when she was a baby, a rat ate off her nose and lips. Life has made her rather unhinged, and her sister’s husband had her committed. When her sister felt guilty and came to get her out, our villain murdered the husband. Dr. Watson signed the papers to have her committed, so in vengeance, she has Dr. Watson committed under the dead husband’s name. Cross-dressingSecret messages through flowers are one of my favourite tropes. Do people still read things into bouquets like that? This is a very clever mystery. Sometimes books in a series can become rather repetitive after awhile, but that is not the case here. Enola has new ideas and techniques to solve this mystery, which is more personal to her due to the disappearance of someone she respects.
