About this deal

On the extras front there's a pleasant surprise in the fact that not only is the release afforded a strong selection of supplemental features, but they are - in a relatively rare exception - actually ported over to the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc proper rather than just relegated to the accompanying Blu-ray disc as has always been the norm. It took six days for military forces to bring it down, but it had already destroyed much of San Francisco and two neighboring cities. Look above Pentecost in that same shot, how posterised the darker regions above his head look in the SDR disc.

Sirens warning you, hurricane, rain, waves and all out war all compete to earn your undivided attention. By the time opening day came around, 'Pacific Rim' sat with a healthy Rotten Tomatoes rating in the low 70s – but that didn't matter. Baby Kaiju Set Visit (HD, 3:07) – Here we get an all access visit to the Hong Kong set to witness firsthand what’s real and what’s digital. Because you really can get sucked into the story, which, silly as it is, does not pretend to be anything other than mind blowing entertainment and just grabs you and won't let go.But overall, the absolute resolution again looks the same; there's really not much more you can see "into" the 4K scene.

If you're a 'Pacific Rim' fan who has upgraded to an Ultra HD display with HDR capabilities, and have Dolby Atmos at home, this release is Must Own. HDR and WCG make the real difference, though, as tech panels become eye-searing in intensity, the palette popping with a vibrancy that often belies the lack of an added dimension, and richer tones vivid throughout.Heck, despite all the debris exploding everywhere in this flick, the dialog is a true winner as it always remains loud, clear and intelligible throughout.

As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction. There are a few washed out moments because of all the employed CG, but if you ask me, that’s to be expected. A dynamic and extensive mid-range exhibits excellent detailing and separation during the loudest, ear-piercing moments, allowing for distinct, audible clarity in the metal-on-metal mayhem and every bone-crunching punch while the hollow, reverberating roars of the Kaiju penetrate deep into the room. No, it's got as much as the Blu-ray in the highlights, if people are seeing worse highlight retention in the UHD then that's on their TV's tone mapping.
